Cheap Dates

Cheap Dates

bowling-ballIt’s Friday night and it’s date night, but all you have is a 20 dollar bill reserved for the occasion. You had pizza last weekend and you went to the movies the weekend before, so what now? Bowling. That $20 can get you a long way at Leisure Lanes Bowling and Golf Center. Located on Columbia Avenue, just twenty minutes right outside of downtown Lancaster, date night becomes something fun again.

bowlingshoesIf you and your date get to the bowling alley before 6 p.m., it will only cost $4.50 for the two of you. So, pick out your favorite colored bowling ball (and maybe take a look at the weight of it, too) and get bowling! Shoes are a standard $2 per person. By now that $8.50 you’ve spent on the date has gone a lot further than it would have at dinner, so enjoy another round before you call it a night. Two games should take you and your date around 45 minutes. If the two of you show up to the lanes after 6 p.m., play one round (for $3.75 each) and get your shoes. In total, you’ll be spending $11.50. The remaining $8.50 can go to beer and snacks!

shrimpIf a fine dinner is more your style and your budget is a little higher (say around $60), try something exotic. Located on Harrisburg Avenue, Sukho Thai serves authentic Thai food within a relaxing atmosphere. The restaurant is BYOB, so be sure to pick up your favorite wine. I recommend trying Lillium Zinfandel Russian River Valley 2012 which comes in at $17.99 or, if you’re more of a white wine fan, try Sparkman Cellars Birdie Riesling Columbia Vly 2012 at $18.99. The subtle notes in these wines will complement the spicy, earthy taste of the Thai food.

wineFor dinner, try number 24 on the menu, the Pad Si Ew. This dish has thick rice noodles and a mixture of vegetables all tossed in soya sauce. The soya sauce counteracts the spice in this dish, making it less aggressive, perfect for non-spicy lovers ($12.95). Vegetarians, try number 36, the Red Curry Rice. The delectable coconut milk pairs perfectly with the curry, coating the vegetables. Rice is served on the side, giving you the option of how much rice you’d like to add to the dish ($13.95). With a 20% tip, the meal will come to just $53.87 or $55.07, depending on your choice of wine.

woodspoonsFor dates with a bigger budget (up to $120), try a couples cooking class. The aroma of fresh cooking will fill the room as you and your date prepare a delicious meal together. Home Run Cooking offers classes in three locations here in Lancaster: the East Side Community Kitchen, Blossom Hill Mennonite Church, and the First United Methodist Church. Every month, Home Run Cooking offers a different selection of classes. These classes range from “Farmers Market Cooking” to “30-Minute Meals” to “Mini Desserts” and others.

potsHaving that one- or two-hour hands-on class together will bring you closer as you cut, dice, and mince fresh ingredients. The “Date Night” cooking classes happen once or twice a month coming in at $60 a person. Previous date night classes have included Parisian food, Italian food, and Spanish food. Other events, like the 30-minute meal classes, will come in at $60 for the two of you. All the ingredients are provided for you; all you have to do is bring your date and your appetites. Just hop on their website and register. There’s nothing like spending time together in the kitchen, so why not learn some new recipes while you’re at it?
