Martin’s Chair, Inc., a premier designer of heirloom-quality Windsor Chairs and 18th century reproduction furniture, recently designed and created 10 custom, solid-wood benches for the indoor bus departure waiting area at Shady Maple, a landmark restaurant and smorgasbord located in East Earl, Pennsylvania.
Shady Maple is known as one of Lancaster County’s most popular eateries, serving nearly 1.5 million customers annually. For years, Shady Maple’s seating for customers travelling by bus was a collection of free-standing metal chairs and wooden rockers. This not only offered an inadequate number of seats for customers traveling by bus, but it was also disconnected from the overall design of the restaurant. Martin’s Chair was called on to provide a solution because of their reputation for quality and experience with custom contract furniture.
Martin’s collaborated with Shady Maple’s interior designer to create fully-custom, functional, and durable benches that would blend in with the existing space and style of the restaurant. Martin’s hand-crafted 10 benches—four upholstered backless benches varying in length (16ft, 20ft, 26ft, and 27ft) and six, 9-ft benches with backs, for a total of 33, 4-ft. sections separated by arm rests. These new benches provided approximately 100 seats—nearly triple the previous number.
Each bench is crafted from solid maple wood with mortise and tenon joint. Additional custom benefits designed by Martin’s include raised bottoms for vacuuming underneath, spread-out back slats for easier cleaning, and increased leg thickness for strength. Martin’s also chose to build the benches in sections, and then bolt them together during installation. This allows individual pieces to be easily unbolted, repaired, or refurbished as needed.
“Shady Maple was looking for a more professional, cohesive look their indoor bus waiting area, so we designed them specifically for the space,” said Teresa Martin, Director of Customer Relations at Martin’s Chair. “Our mission was to create pieces that would serve [customers] for many years to come, while also reflecting Martin’s experience and who we are as quality craftsmen.”
