Four student rock bands from the Millersville Music Business Technology program will open with songs from the 1969 era before Jefferson Starship takes the stage. They will feature music from Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Santana, and others. Millersville President John Anderson will also make a guest appearance, along with Grammy Award winning guitarist David Cullen.

MU Professor of Music Dr. Barry Atticks says, “I wanted the students to understand the musical, historical, and cultural impact of that time in history and expose them to the artists who influenced an entire generation of musicians.”

Consequently, Dr. Atticks has succeeded in booking both Jefferson Starship (formerly Jefferson Airplane) and John Sebastian – no easy task as most of those artists are retired from touring.

Jefferson Starship will play many of their hit songs from that era. Included in the band will be Jefferson Starship’s Guitarist David Freiberg, who is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the iconic band.

John Sebastian, who is also in the Rock Hall with the band The Lovin Spoonful, will both perform in the show and host a session with students earlier in the day to talk about his musical career.

Jefferson Starship is an American rock band formed in the early 1970s by several members of the former psychedelic rock group Jefferson Airplane. Their music defined the San Francisco Sound of the 1960’s and 70’s, and headlined at festivals including Monterey in 1967 and Altamont in 1969. The band is best known for hits like “Somebody to Love,” “White Rabbit,” and “Comin’ Back to Me.”

John Sebastian is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist known for being the front man of band, The Lovin Spoonful. The Lovin Spoonful blended folk-rock and pop with elements of country, blues, and jug band music, and was noted for hits such as “Summer in the City,” “Do You Believe in Magic,” “Darling Be Home Soon,” and “Rain on the Roof.”
