The Lancaster International Piano Festival returns for its fifth season at the Ware Center, located at 42 N. Prince Street, Lancaster, and at the Winter Center on the Millersville University campus, located at 60 W. Cottage Avenue, Millersville.

ABOUT THE LANCASTER INTERNATIONAL PIANO FESTIVAL:

Now in its fifth year, the Lancaster International Piano Festival is rapidly generating a reputation as an intensive educational program for rising international young piano stars as well as an outstanding concert series by world-class pianists. A non-profit arts organization dedicated to the performance and teaching of classical music at the highest standard, LIPF invites young aspiring concert pianists, teachers, amateurs, and piano lovers at large to participate in this inspiring and informative ten-day program. LIPF’s faculty consists of the following: Dr. Xun Pan, Dr. Hedi Salanki, Dr. Ivo Kaltchev, Shuang Cai, Dr. Eric Fung, Dr. Matthew Quick, Simon Maurer, Dr. John H. LIPF Shanghai Quartet 2016

LIPF 2016 Opening Concert: Shanghai Quartet, Featuring Simon Maurer and Xun Pan

Renowned for its passionate musicality, impressive technique, and multicultural innovations, the Shanghai Quartet is now one of the world’s foremost chamber ensembles. Its elegant style melds the delicacy of Eastern music with the emotional breadth of Western repertoire, allowing it to traverse musical genres including traditional Chinese folk music, masterpieces of Western music, and cutting-edge contemporary works. Program: Brahms, String Quartet No. 1; Dvorak, Piano Quintet No. 2.

Called the “Van Cliburn of today” by the BBC, pianist Alexander Kobrin has placed himself at the fore-front of today’s performing musicians. His prize winning performances have been praised for their brilliant technique, musicality, and emotional engagement with the audience. Program: Schumann, Piano Sonata No. 3; Brahms Piano Sonata No. 2; Schubert, Piano Sonata in B-flat.


LIPF 2016 Competition Semi-Final
Sunday, July 17 | 3:00pm • Winter Center | Millersville

Rising international young pianists will perform and compete to place in the final competition. Six students will be chosen.


Xiaofeng Zhang and Francesco Mirabella
Sunday, July 17 | 7:30pm • Ware Center | Lancaster

Xiaofeng Zhang studied at the Central Conservatory of Music for his Bachelor’s degree and Hochschule fuer Musik “HannsEisler” in Berlin, Germany for his Master’s Degree. He has taught at the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing since 2002. Francesco Mirabella studied at the prestigious National Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome. Currently, he is the artistic director of the Friends of Music “Peppino Cultrera” in Scicli, Sicily, and is a faculty member of the Sassari Conservatory, in Sardinia, Italy. Program: Liszt, Apres une Lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata; Ginastera, Piano Sonata No. 1; Chopin, Polonaise in A-flat major; Debussy, Images, Book 1; Stravinsky, Trois mouvements de Petrouchka.


Meng-Chieh Liu
Monday, July 18 | 7:30pm • Ware Center | Lancaster

Mr. Liu received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Jorge Bolet, Eleanor Sokoloff, and Claude Frank. He received first prizes in the Stravinsky, Asia Pacific Piano, and Mieczyslaw Munz competitions. Mr. Liu has been a member of the Curtis Institute of Music faculty since 1993 and also serves on the faculties of Roosevelt University and the New England Conservatory. Program: Brahms, Hungarian Variations; Bartok Hungarian Peasant Songs; Brahms, Hungarian Dances; Schubert, Hungarian Melodie; Liszt, Hungarian Rhapsody.

Santiago Rodriguez
Thursday, July 21 | 7:30pm • Ware Center | Lancaster

Santiago Rodriguez has been called “a phenomenal pianist” (The New York Times) and “among the finest pianists in the world” (The Baltimore Sun). As a chamber musician, Mr. Rodriguez has enjoyed collaborations with illustrious ensembles such as the Guarneri String Quartet and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Program: Mozart, Sonata in C major; Schumann, Carnaval, Op. 9; Rachmaninov, Eight Pieces.


LIPF 2016 Student Concert
Saturday, July 23 | 3:00pm • Winter Center | Millersville 

This cumulative concert showcases the talent of all festival participants and exemplary student pianists from around the world.


LIPF 2016 Piano Gala
Saturday, July 23 | 7:30pm • Ware Center | Lancaster

The Lancaster International Piano Festival will close with a formal evening of piano expertise, during which the top performing students, selected by LIPF judges, will perform for a Lancaster audience.
