Innovator Award: Grandview Vineyard
In one sentence, tell us what you do.
Our attention to detail in the vineyard and cellar enables us to produce and sell wines that display complexity and character, representing the best of Pennsylvania wine, raising the reputation and proving that Pennsylvania can produce quality dry wines.
Why did you start doing the work you're doing?
“I have a love for dry wines. At the time I started making wine, no one was making dry fruit wines and I liked the idea of making something from berries that I could gather on roadside banks, etc. Then later, I found out that our soil was great for growing premium Bordeaux grapes and I wanted to prove that Pennsylvania could produce excellent dry wines. Our very first vintage Bordeaux style blend, 2013 Grande Rouge, won a Double Gold at the San Francisco International Wine Competition, giving us confirmation that our dreams were possible.” — Larry Kennel, Partner/Winemaker
What inspires you?
“I find inspiration by surrounding myself with entrepreneurs and business leaders who challenge me to be a better person and to think outside of the box.” — Sarah Haines, Partner/Director of Marketing & Sales
“Winemaking inspires me because it is the intertwining of science and art, two things that I love.” —
Fran Kratz, Partner
What's most special about Lancaster to you?
Lancaster has a unique community, an intertwined network of individuals who care about and support local businesses, including local farms. When it comes to farming, there are many different soil types in Lancaster County. Our vineyard is located on a specific terroir in Lancaster County yielding a shaley, well drained soil that enables us to produce high quality grapes.
How do you take care of yourself when you're feeling burnt out?
“Porch sitting at my cabin up north.” — Larry Kennel
“A lunch date with a friend, a cup of tea and a book, and exercise are all ways that I decompress.” — Sarah Haines
“I retreat to the cabin for rest and relaxation.” — Fran Kratz, Partner
What's your advice to people who have big dreams and visions they want to make reality?
“There will always be resistance and naysayers. Align yourself with those who believe in you and keep going when you feel like quitting. Dreams become a reality with hard work and perseverance.” — Sarah Haines
“There will be many obstacles to success and success now may not look like it did when you started. Persistence and perseverance with the support of family and friends is a great asset.” — Fran Kratz
How do you hope to change your community — and the world?
At Grandview, we aim to create an inclusive environment that is an extension of our family, providing a place for people to gather where they can not only enjoy quality wine, but where they can fellowship and feel part of a larger community. With both a unique experience and quality product, we hope to change the perception of Pennsylvania wine and develop Lancaster County into a wine country destination that has a reputation for premium dry wines.
