Crafted with Love

Crafted with Love

Crafted with Love

Perhaps more than any other single item you own, your furniture can play a significant role in your life. The antique rocking chair you inherited from your great grandmother. The kitchen table you splurged on when you moved into your first adult apartment. The king-size bed you invested in when you moved in with your future spouse.

Jason and Lisa Lewis, the incredible husband and wife team behind Crafted of Light & Lumber, know better than most how meaningful these pieces of functional art can be. In their work building custom furniture for their clients, they provide so much more than just their deep knowledge of woodworking. Instead, they also bring a love of family, and a desire to build the perfect setting for all of life’s moments.

FLL: Let’s start at the beginning: Please tell us a bit about Crafted of Light & Lumber!

Jason Lewis: We are a husband and wife team who love life and love creating together. We’ve put together an incredible team of creative minds who help bring each creation to life. It’s our goal to craft unique, well-built pieces that bring joy to those who receive them. We want to help you create a space that you love that allows you to rest, relax, restore.

Our most popular products are our farmhouse ceiling lights; we make all shapes and sizes, up to an 8’ long beam. I think people come to us mostly for our unique products. We make everything we offer—and we do it to order. If you order a light from us, we start with our lumber pile and take it all the way to wiring and packaging, all in about seven to eight days. We even allow our customers to choose stain colors, custom electrical locations on the beam, and several other customizations. I believe that’s one deciding factor that brings our customers to us—and keeps them coming back.

We’ve been in business since January 2017 and have had great success, but it has mostly been online. Now, we’re looking to work with more of our neighbors here in Lancaster—I think our products would serve the people of Lancaster County well.

What do you love about your business?

What we love most about our business is that what we do helps people create spaces that they enjoy—whether that’s a cutting board, an entryway light, or furniture pieces like a dining room table.

Especially our tables—we know that most of the memories a family makes together are sitting around their dining room table. When someone has us build them a table, we talk about those future memories—the game nights, the engagement announcement, and so many more. We build our tables, and all of our items, to be around for all of those important memories.

What is Crafted of Light & Lumber best known for?

I believe we’re best known for creating well-built products, at a reasonable price, in a short time.  More recently, we’re known for creating incredible hardwood and epoxy/resin pieces.

Do you have a favorite piece you’ve ever made?

Choosing a favorite piece is difficult. If I had to choose a favorite, it would definitely be the furniture we make. We made a complete custom desk with a 'basket weave' style desktop and multiple types of hardwood—that one shipped to Texas. Most recently, we made a black walnut table with an onyx black epoxy that went to Colorado. All of our furniture is custom-made, so it’s hard to pick just one favorite.

Do you just work with individuals, or with businesses, too?

We work with businesses, as well. Salons, restaurants, and more. If you’ve been into Salon Enso, for example, we made all of the salon carts, cabinets, and custom epoxy tables there.

What is it like to be a husband and wife team in business together?

We are partners in life, so it only makes sense to be partners in business.

Early on, Lisa got her hands just as dirty as I did. When we first started, I was working a full-time job, so I couldn't do it all. On Lisa's days off from her regular job as a hairstylist, she would help with sanding, staining, and packaging. She was a driving force for a long time, researching e-commerce and social media.

As Crafted of Light & Lumber has grown, our roles have changed. Crafted is now my full-time job, and has been since October 2020. I oversee the day-to-day operations; I get to "play" in the shop when we are short-staffed or when we are creating new products. Lisa has a more utilitarian role now; she handles the accounts payable, and comes into the shop from time to time to help as needed.

We are always dreaming together about what is next for Crafted—new products, expansion, and more. We recently launched our own website that Lisa and I configured ourselves. You can find  us at www.craftedoflight.com.
