Notable Domiciles: Rock Ford Plantation

— From the pages of FLL#37 • Content provided by Pamela Dull > Lusk & Associates | Sotheby’s International Realty

My name is Pamela Dull, and I am a Realtor® with Lusk & Associates | Sotheby’s International Realty. In FLL issue #35, I told you about the rich heritage of Wheatland, the former Lancaster home of our nation’s 15th president, James Buchanan. Now I would like to take you to the Rock Ford Plantation, located just one mile outside of downtown Lancaster in Lancaster County Central Park.

This beautiful and historic 18th-century home belonged to Edward Hand, a general in the Revolutionary War who served under George Washington. Hand came to the United States in 1767 as a surgeon’s mate for the British Army, and after seven years of service, he left the ranks and moved to Lancaster to practice medicine. When the American Revolution began in 1775, Hand entered the Continental Army, leading troops in several key battles and even participating in Washington’s famous crossing of the Delaware River. In Hand’s post-war years, he resumed his medical work and also was an active civil servant within the growing democracy.

During this time, Hand’s family was expanding and called for a larger home. Nearby the Conestoga River, the Rock Ford Plantation was built between 1791 and 1794 and has stood the test of time. Over many years and with various uses, today greater than 90% of the original home’s historic fabric are still intact. A reconstructed 18th-century barn also stands proudly on the property and hosts various special events like weddings, reunions and larger parties.

Today, you can visit the plantation to tour Rock Ford and learn more about its history. The home is open to the public for guided tours from April through October.

As a Realtor, I am dedicated to helping people find the right home. Just like the story of General Edward Hand, Rock Ford Plantation and their place in Lancaster’s history, I enjoy helping new homeowners write their own history!
