Your 2020 Home Decor Trend Predictions — Straight From the Experts

With every new year comes a new wave of trends. It should come as no surprise that when considering a home renovation, the same rings true. In 2019, just about everyone fell in love with the look of a modern farmhouse. From bright white paint and natural textures to distressed finishes, Americans connected with the industrial spin placed on a rustic aesthetic.

But what keeps the real estate world on its toes today may not persist into the future. So why not stay ahead of the curve? Whether you’re looking to purchase a new home or freshen up the space you’re in, design and decor are ever-evolving. So here’s a sneak preview of what’s bound to be hot in 2020.

For all things color, we’ve tapped the expertise of local business owner Bryan Jones. With roughly four decades of experience in the building industry, Jones has seen it all. His company, Harmony Painting and Restoration, has been a family owned and operated endeavor for upwards of twenty years. During that time his work has expanded to include interior and exterior painting, staining, wallpaper application, and old home restoration.

“In 2019, we noticed a lot of black and white, blues, greys, and cool tones. Exterior trending colors were similar, often white with black trim and natural wood accents,” began Jones. “For the upcoming year I anticipate simple black and white contrasts to continue to be popular. Overall, homeowners are moving away from yellow toned whites and leaning more toward bright, clean white walls. For those looking to revamp their homes at the start of a new year, I always recommend a fresh coat of paint. Aside from clean whites, colored accent walls are great for adding depth to a room.”

In terms of trends, Behr Paint Company has released its 2020 color of the year: Back to Nature. Described as calm and balanced, this green shade and its accompanying palettes, reflect natural elements inspired by the sky, earth and water. Each of these colors are designed to work in a full room or as a rich accent wall.

Interestingly, paint isn’t just making a splash on the walls. In fact for Jones, two toned cabinetry featuring cool hues has been a growing trend in the last year. “As a professional painter, I love seeing when people aren't afraid to use color, and the kitchen is a great place to start.” With this trend in mind, it’s no surprise Sherwin-Williams chose a navy blue shade named Naval as its 2020 color of the year. According to the editors at Better Home and Garden a contemporary kitchen with navy blue cabinets is sure to be an admired trend.

Another exciting movement hitting (or shall we say, re-entering) the design world? Wallpaper.

Once an outdated interior staple, textured wallpaper is in the midst of a major revival. As described by StyleCaster.com author Lindsey Lanquist, people searched for “bold print wallpaper” in 2019 at an increased rate of 401 percent. This is a far cry from the days we associated wrapped walls with our grandmother’s home decor.

Similarly, the experts at HGTV predict wild wallpaper will be especially popular in bathrooms. And according to Jones, this trend is already coming to life here in Lancaster. “Wallpaper has made a huge comeback over the last year, although instead of using it in large rooms, we’re implementing it in smaller areas of the home.” In 2020, he expects a continued upswing in patterns and grasscloth. “I’ve really enjoyed working with textures on accent walls and ceilings such as painted embossed wallpaper or shiplap. So, I’m happy to see more of that.”

With the walls of the home ironed out, it’s time now to turn our attention to design and decor. As you may have guessed, a rustic, natural aesthetic is still in high demand. To this end, Jones anticipates natural wood features such as open shelving and exposed beams to be everywhere.

“In regard to fixtures and hardware, we have seen a lot more brass, bronze and copper over the past year,” he added. This is very much reiterated by the expert designers at Pottery Barn who’s recent inspiration article titled “New Looks to Love: Farmhouse Industrial” speaks to the beautiful juxtaposition of wood and modern metal. To play up this aesthetic, they suggest incorporating white washed wood accents, pops of red and navy hues, and classic stripe, buffalo check and gingham prints. Other decor trends to be on the lookout for (courtesy of retail giant IKEA) include gradient patterns, geometric shapes and pastel colored accents.

It’s important to keep in mind, however, that trends aren’t meant to change our personal style. Instead, we should look at them as an opportunity to explore how design can impact and enhance our lives. So regardless of your style preferences, remember to stay true to the things you love, and enjoy the process of constantly making your house feel like a home.
