How To: Update Your Living Space

The vision for this Living Room was as much functional as it was aesthetic. The home owners were looking to use their space for personal relaxation and television viewing, but also wanted to make sure it was a great spot to host monthly book clubs. The room’s previous layout included two sofas that were slightly overlapping, which created a less than ideal conversation area, as well as a dead corner. The coffee table was not centrally located between the two sofas, and therefore created an off-balanced feeling in the room.

Going into this redesign, our team at Ville + Rue wanted to optimize seating and anchor the space. A more modern—yet still comfortable—sectional was the answer. We set the sectional closer to the middle of the room, creating a more intimate space, as well as more comfortable conversation area. The couple now had more room to lounge together on the sectional (instead of two different sofas) by sharing the corner piece.

Working with a traditional rug and beautiful hardwood floors already in the home, we wanted to balance the space with some modern furniture and clean lines. To balance the warmth of the rug and floors, we chose a perfect, neutral grey upholstery; it was important to not go too beige—which would lean traditional—or too slate grey—which would lean more modern and bring a colder feel to the room.

To break up the wood and upholstery, we used a metal and marble side table, as well as a bluestone and metal console table. We also brought in a marbled, ceramic lamp to tie the pieces together and create visual harmony throughout the space.

We used several throw pillows as accents in the corners of the sectional to break up the lighter color and pull in colors from the rug. (We couldn’t forget our beloved City Bear pillow! The pièce de résistance, if you will.) The owners already had some beautiful botanicals for us to work with, so we added a few additional faux succulents around the space to add life to the area.

All in all, this was such a fun project and we had a blast making this living room a better representation of the owners and a better fit for their lifestyle!
