Nothing prepares you for a global pandemic and its subsequent effects on your small business. You do not start, build, and grow your business while considering the possibility of a world-wide shutdown. So, in March of 2020, when we were hit with this unprecedented global disaster, my firm, Lancaster Law Group, LLC, had to pivot away from our traditional daily routine. Law firms are notoriously behind the times—still using fax machines and printing out everything on paper. We meet our clients in the office and pull out thick books to review and explain legal decisions. So one can imagine the shock to our market when the world just stopped and we could no longer trudge to the office each morning and appear in court each day.

On March 18, 2020, the Lancaster County Courthouse closed. Our law practice, which focuses on areas of law that require extensive courtroom litigation on a daily basis, had to adjust to this new reality. Our obligations as counsel to our clients did not cease because of the courthouse closure. We were aware that our clients’ legal issues did not disappear simply because the court system closed its doors. Consequently, we had to adjust Lancaster Law Group’s procedures to ensure that we could continue to provide the service our clients expect.

When we were suddenly relegated to working from home, we had to make immediate adjustments. Although many of us had never heard of Zoom before, it suddenly became a very necessary tool for communication. We invested in computer equipment for our entire team so that they could all work efficiently from home. These immediate adjustments allowed our clients to continue to receive the attentive service that they had grown accustomed to prior to COVID-19.

We have continued to evolve as a firm by implementing procedures and investing in computer programs that allow us to better-serve our clients. We’ve recently invested in programs to allow for clients to sign legal documents remotely, making their experience less cumbersome and the legal process more expedient.

Our firm has always tried to adhere to our mission statement, that we have a firm commitment to trust. We have worked extremely hard over the past year to honor that commitment to our clients as we all weathered this unprecedented and tragic pandemic. We are proud of how our business community has worked together to survive the dark days and look forward to being a part of Lancaster’s recovery and bright future.
