Lancaster County Food Hub
Did you know? The Lancaster County Food Hub was founded in 1947 by a collection of churches who unified their community service efforts for neighbors in need. It was appropriately established as the Lancaster County Council of Churches.
Over the years, the organization developed into a large social service agency providing food, clothing, and shelter for those struggling to make ends meet. Just six years ago, a new building was acquired at 812 N. Queen Street in downtown Lancaster, expanding service capacity five times over in response to Lancaster’s growing needs.
Serving with dignity. Today, the Food Hub is the only services organization in Lancaster County to offer, under one roof, free food, free clothing, and emergency shelter in a low-barrier, non-programmatic infrastructure. In short, anyone who needs food, clothing, or shelter can access services just by walking in the door.
The Food Hub has grown to distribute more than 1 million pounds of food and nearly 60,000 pounds of clothing to tens of thousands of people annually and provides shelter to at-risk, struggling, and homeless neighbors 365 nights a year.
In addition to food, clothing, and monetary donations, a large core of dedicated volunteers share an average of 11,000 hours of service yearly — equivalent to five full time staff positions — to help keep overhead costs low and focus resources on service delivery.
What’s in a name? It is imperative that at-risk neighbors know where to find the services they need. The Lancaster County Food Hub’s new name provides that important, recognizable connection to life’s most basic needs.
Rooted in faith and compassion, the Lancaster County Food Hub provides services that honor the dignity of all. With the Lancaster community’s generous partnership, we can ‘fill the bags’ this holiday season with fresh, nutritious food and clothing and ensure everyone has a place to lay their heads at night.
